We were excited to chat with Joseph to learn more about his life touching so many parts of the beauty industry — read on for more!
Q: How did you get into hair?
I grew up with a single mom and a little sister, so I ended up doing my sister’s hair for church and school growing up. It came naturally to me. My family really encouraged me to explore it professionally because I never viewed it as a talent. It was just something I knew how to do.
Q: How would you describe your style as a hairstylist? What’s your beauty philosophy?
I really don’t have a beauty philosophy, I just love design and beauty. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly edgy — I enjoy making people look like the best version of themselves.
Q: What do you love most about your work?
I work with some pretty incredible women that inspire me daily, and I’m so grateful that my career is both social and creative. There’s also an instant gratification aspect that is really fun. You get to see your work come alive on a red carpet moments after the client leaves you.
Q: Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration all around. My love for design pours into all aspects of life. I most often find inspiration when I take time off to allow my mind to be quiet, and then I’ll suddenly be flooded with great ideas.
Q: When you think of all of the looks you’ve created, is there a favorite that comes to mind? What is it?
It’s less about the look and more about the moment that comes to mind. My first big awards show was the Emmys with Kate McKinnon, and she won the award she was nominated for. I remember feeling so happy to have been a small part of a moment she will never forget (and she looked gorgeous).
Q: You often use Tik Tok to showcase hairstyles, techniques, tips, and tricks. What inspired you to do that and what is the response you’ve gotten from it?
TikTok was the perfect storm for me — the right app at the right time. I never focused on creating tutorial content before this year because I didn’t have the time, and editing would take so long. TikTok allows you to edit as you film, and with the extra downtime, it allowed me to continue to be creative and engage with my following a bit more. I’ve really enjoyed it and people seem to love it!
Q: What are some essential tools and products in your kit?
There are so many, but the first few to come to mind are my YS Park Round Brush, Babe Waves by Trademark Beauty, Dream Coat by Color Wow, RPZL Polisher Brush, and my seamless clips.
Q: What are some of your personal favorite products you can’t live without?
I only wash my hair with the Color Wow Shampoo. I’m obsessed with the IS Clinical Cleansing Complex Face Wash. Love the Drunk Elephant Whipped Moisturizer and the Fresh Black Tea Anti Aging Moisturizer. My signature scent is Creed Aventus.
