The Do's & Don'ts of Men's Grooming with Celebrity Men's Groomer Amy Komorowski
Amy Komorowski provides her ten do's and don'ts for simple, "no one should know you were groomed" grooming.
Amy Komorowski is one of the industry's biggest men's groomers, with an impressive client list including Justin Timberlake, The Jonas Brothers, Adam Driver, and countless others. Amy has a keen eye for detail and prides herself on creating looks for her clients that are sleek and put-together, all while looking beautifully effortless. Read on to learn some of Amy's do's and don'ts for staying well-groomed every day — from skin, to hair, to brows and beards.
Do wash your face.
Seems simple and common sense, but washing your face (especially at nighttime) is so important. It removes the day’s grime and leaves a radiant, youthful glow. My go-to is the Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Acid Cleanser. This clear gel cleanser improves tone and texture and helps with breakouts.
Don't over pluck/wax your brows.
I usually don’t like to say “never” or “don’t” when it comes to one’s personal style or taste, but I don’t think over-plucked brows are becoming for a guy. I’m one for classic, understated grooming, and overly waxed or too defined brows are distracting and not in harmony with the face. Instead, use a beard trimmer or a peach fuzz trimmer to clean up the face and neck area, like the Norelco One Blade or Dermaflash Peach Fuzz Trimmer.
Do apply some hair product.
There seem to be two types of guys: ones that put too much product in their hair, and the others that don’t use anything at all. I find that guys want a particular style and either don’t use any product, or just don’t know what to use to get the look. My advice is to start simple and use a little cream, paste, or pomade, depending on length and texture. A little goes a long way for volume, extra hold, or added texture. Try Baxter of California Cream Pomade, V76 by Vaughn V Rated Natural Wax, and Jillian Dempsey The Roadie Hair Pomade.
Don’t put too much product in your hair.
Maybe worse than no product at all, applying too much product that leaves hair hard or sticky-looking is a don’t. Apply a dime-sized amount of product — you can always add more.
Do invest in skincare and apply moisturizer.
This is another simple step, but one that many guys overlook. The simple act of applying a good moisturizer can make skin appear more alive and youthful. Guys’ skin can get particularly dry, under eyes get dark and puffy, and pores look big and clogged. Investing in a good face mask, eye cream, and moisturizer is key. Try Skyn Iceland Eye Pads, Susanne Kaufmann Eye Cream, and Jaxon Lane Moisturizer.
Don’t keep using the same hair product you used in college.
Guys tend to get a bit hung up on products they’ve always used and are not sure how to use new products. It’s easy to get used to seeing yourself a certain way and not realize it’s not working anymore. There are so many hair innovations and products out there. Here are a few of my favorites at the moment: R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste, Harklinikken Leave-In Hair Hydrating Creme, and Ouai Matte Pomade.
Do keep your essentials organized in a Dopp Kit.
Having all of your “go-to” grooming products in one organized place ensures you’ll use them! I love the Pierre Hardy Perspective Cube Dopp Kit. It’s the perfect size, easy to get at your products, and so, so chic. I get more compliments on this bag than any other item I own.
Don’t be afraid to use a hairdryer.
Many guys want more volume on top or to have the appearance of thicker hair. The quickest and easiest way to achieve this is with a hairdryer. I love the T3 Cura Luxe for guys’ hair, as the speed and amount of airflow are perfect for shorter lengths.
Do keep nails and pesky unwanted face hair trimmed.
Get a manicure set with all the tools included and add it to the Dopp Kit. Use once a week and trim nails, nose, ears, and any long, unruly eyebrow hairs. I love the Czech & Speake Leather Bound Manicure Kit.
Don’t be afraid of a hair texturizer spray.
Oribe Texturizing Spray is a must-have in my men’s grooming kit. I use this spray on probably 90% of my clients. It builds volume and adds grip and texture to the hair.
