Q+A with Celebrity Facialist & Skincare Expert Joanna Czech

Joanna Czech is a celebrity facialist and skincare expert based out of New York with over 35 years of experience in the field. With clients like Jennifer Aniston, Kate Winslet, and Anna Wintour just to name a few, Joanna has rightfully gained global renown and is trusted by Hollywood's biggest names to keep their skin healthy, clear, and glowing. Known for her use of innovative technology, timeless techniques, and what she's learned in her home country of Poland, there is no wonder why her studio has become so iconic. Q: How did you get into skincare?

It was by accident. I was preparing to go to medical school in Poland where I grew up, and I failed physics. So the summer that I was studying to retake the exam, I enrolled in an esthetics institute and I was hooked. In Poland, it is a 2 1/2 year program and you delve quite deeply into anatomy, physiology, biology, and psychology.

Q: Part of your skin philosophy is that it’s important to have a seasonal regimen. What is a product you swear by all year round that you carry over from season to season?

Environ Vita-Peptide C-Quence Serum. Vitamin A (commonly referred to as retinol), is considered to be the most crucial ingredient in maintaining optimal skin health. Working on both the dermis and the epidermis, this fundamental vitamin has the ability to attach itself to skin cells, normalizing their function and getting them to behave like younger, healthier versions of themselves. What’s great about Environ’s A is that it is encapsulated in lipids, making it a very gentle approach to vitamin A.

Q: What do you love the most about what you do?

Ever since I was a child, I would bandage my dolls and give them crutches…I really love taking care of people and educating them so they can take better care of themselves. I meet so many interesting people in my job, and I love learning from them as well.

Q: What is a myth about skincare that you want to debunk?

I don’t like the term "anti-aging" because that is unavoidable. If you aren’t aging, you aren’t breathing. I prefer to “slow down the aging process”, which is possible with proper skincare products and non-invasive treatments.

Q: What is one product everyone should be using, no matter what their skin type?

Hmmm. There are two products that I think everyone can benefit from: a pH controlling, exfoliating toner, and a super hydrating moisturizer. My favorites are Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 (I use PIGM 400, but there are six strengths depending on your skin conditions) and Biologique Recherche Creme Masque Vernix, which is 80% hyaluronic acid and incredibly soothing and protective.

Q: What is your best advice for someone who is struggling to find a skincare routine that works for them?

Make sure you communicate and consult with an expert in person or virtually. This will ensure that you are using the correct products and treatments for your unique skin. Do not do what your girlfriend does.

Q: What do you wish people were talking more about in skincare?

General health: Products and treatments are responsible for about 30% of skin health. Diet, exercise, mental health, sleep, etc. make up the rest, so it should be talked about more.

Approaching the skin on your entire body, not just your face: Our skin is the body's largest organ and our face is a small portion. We need to treat the rest of the body as we do our face for the sake of our health.

Importance of nighttime routine: Products’ efficacies are 60% stronger when the body is at rest.

Dangers of over-exfoliating or over-treating the skin: Skin needs to be respected, supported, and protected.
