Q+A with Dermatologist Dr. Gabriella Vasile

Dr. Gabriella Vasile is a board-certified dermatologist based out of Miami who was inspired to enter the field at a young age — she dreamed of being a dermatologist as a little girl and was surrounded by amazing physicians in her family who acted as role models. On top of her work in-office, Dr. Vasile also runs a blog called Destination Derm, which acts as a place for aspiring dermatologists to turn to for support, motivation, and resources as they enter the residency match process and beyond. Read on to learn more about Dr. Vasile and her knowledge in skincare!

Q: First and foremost, we’d love to hear about your journey in dermatology. How did you get started, and how did you get to where you are today?

I discovered my passion for dermatology and skincare at an early age and dreamed of becoming a dermatologist as early as the 6th grade. I completed medical school and while I tried to stay open about what speciality to pursue, I was continually drawn towards dermatology. After completing my dermatology residency this past year, I officially became a dermatologist! I am currently pursuing a subspecialty fellowship in Cosmetic Dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery.

Q: What do you love the most about what you do?

Dermatologists are able to treat a wide range of medical conditions, from acne to connective tissue disease. We also are experts in cosmetic procedures. I love being able to raise a patient’s self esteem so they feel more confident.

Q: When and how did you realize you were doing what you were meant to do?

I always wanted to be a doctor after seeing other physicians in my family act as amazing role models. I was so inspired by the patient-physician relationships that they formed, and knew I wanted that for myself one day. It’s such a unique bond to share.

Q: You’re currently completing a Mohs micrographic surgery and cosmetic dermatology fellowship. Can you tell us a bit about that and what experience that will provide you?

While dermatologists learn a wide range of surgical and cosmetic procedures during residency, I chose to pursue a one year fellowship to become a true expert. I want to be able to provide my patients with the best possible care. During fellowship, I have learned a special technique called Mohs surgery to remove skin cancer in delicate areas, and reconstruct defects left by the cancer removal. I also have learned a wide range of cosmetic procedures like lasers, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), liposuction, injectables and neuromodulators, sclerotherapy, hair transplant, and many more!

Q: What is a myth about skincare that you want to debunk?

That you have to use expensive skincare to have good skin! There are so many products out there on the market, and while I love splurging on the occasional product, having good skin is really about consistency, choosing what is right for your skin type, and wearing sunscreen!

Q: You use your blog, Destination Derm, as a place for aspiring dermatologists to have a resource as they carry out their journeys in the field. What do you love the most about creating this community, and what have you learned about yourself and your own practice as you create this place to teach others?

I still remember the day when I was a TERRIFIED and overwhelmed medical student trying to navigate the dermatology residency match process. It seemed impossible, but guess what!? I did it! I want other medical students interested in pursuing dermatology to believe in themselves. It’s so rewarding to help others and make the process a little more manageable.

Q: What is one product everyone should be using, no matter what their skin type?

Sunscreen obviously! SPF is the most important product for preventing signs of aging.

Q: What is your best advice for someone who is struggling to find a skin routine that works for them?

Go and see a board-certified dermatologist! We are skincare experts and can make a tailored plan just for you.

Q: What do you wish people were talking more about in skincare?

Mild exfoliants like alpha and beta hydroxy acids and glycolic acid. Gentle formulations can work wonders on the skin and give you that glow!
